Switzerland
Come for the mountains. Stay because the town deserves more than a view from the train.
Thun sits where the Aare leaves the lake, with a castle above the old town and mountains filling the horizon beyond it. It would be easy to treat it as somewhere you pass through on the way deeper into the Bernese Oberland. That would be a mistake.
The old town has its own peculiar character — particularly the raised pavements of Obere Hauptgasse — while the river, lake and castle keep changing the view as you walk. Give Thun itself a proper day before deciding that every spare hour needs to become a mountain excursion.
4 days is ideal for Thun.
Why Wendelse likes it
The main street has shops at ground level and a raised pavement built on their roofs, with staircases up to a second row of cafés and bars. It is genuinely unusual — worth walking both levels — and it is the best reason to slow down in the old town rather than passing through.
The climb up from the old town takes ten minutes and the reward is immediate: lake, river, town and the Bernese Alps in one sweep, which explains why anyone built here. The keep's museum is modest; go for the towers and the view rather than the collection.
This is where the lake becomes a river, fast and startlingly turquoise, with wooden footbridges over the weirs. It is the most characterful place in town to sit with a drink, and in summer you will see locals floating down it.
An easy half-hour walk along the river brings you to the lakefront, the Schadau park and one of the classic Alpine views. Take a boat back into town if the timings suit; otherwise walk the shore and let the afternoon go.
The Oberland starts here and it is tempting to use Thun purely as a base. For a short break, pick a single day out — a mountain or a lake steamer — and leave the rest of the time for the town itself.
One proper Bernese meal and a drink on the Aare does more for the trip than a restaurant list. The upper-level terraces on Obere Hauptgasse are the local move on a warm evening.

Follow the river out to the lake, take a boat, or make one excursion if the weather is right.
A mountain, more lake, the park — or simply more of Thun.
Do not use Thun merely as accommodation for somewhere more famous.
