Switzerland
The library is extraordinary. The city around it deserves your attention too.
St. Gallen has one genuinely world-class sight: an abbey district whose library grew from one of medieval Europe's great centres of learning. But step outside and the city has another story — elaborate oriel windows across the old town, a textile industry that reached the world's fashion houses and green hills rising almost immediately beyond the streets.
Give the abbey proper time. Then look up at the old-town façades, learn why embroidery matters here and walk uphill. St. Gallen works because serious cultural history and ordinary small-city Switzerland sit remarkably close together.
4 days is ideal for St. Gallen.
Why Wendelse likes it
The baroque Abbey Library is the reason to come: a single rococo hall holding manuscripts that go back to the eighth century, entered in felt overshoes. Give it a proper visit rather than a look, and take in the cathedral and the abbey archives in the same walk — the whole district is compact.
More than a hundred carved and painted oriel windows hang over the lanes north of the abbey, paid for by textile merchants showing off. Walk Gallusstrasse and Spisergasse looking upwards; it takes twenty minutes and it is the city's other signature.
St. Gallen embroidery once dressed Paris couture houses, and it still supplies them. The Textile Museum is small, well done and explains both the wealth and the façades — move it up your list if design, craft or industrial history interests you.
Three nineteenth-century bathing ponds on the hillside above the city, reached by a short funicular or a steep twenty-minute walk. Locals swim there in summer and drink on the terraces at sunset, with the whole city below.
Part of the appeal is that St. Gallen isn't performing for visitors. Leave a couple of unplanned hours for cafés, squares and the Marktplatz, particularly on a market morning.
The local Olma bratwurst is eaten without mustard — ask for it and you will be corrected. For a sit-down meal, look for an Erststockbeizli, the traditional taverns on the first floor above the street.

One carefully chosen extension: Appenzellerland, or Lake Constance.
Do not leave the Abbey Library and conclude that you have seen St. Gallen.
