Bulgaria
A fragmented Balkan capital where Roman streets, Orthodox revival, Ottoman survival and socialist planning remain visible in uneasy proximity.
Sofia does not offer a continuous historic centre. Its interest comes from interruption: Roman Serdica appears beneath modern streets; churches, mosque and synagogue mark overlapping communities; national institutions and socialist avenues impose later stories on older fragments. Museums and monuments require attention to how Bulgarian identity has been constructed and contested.
Markets, cafés and broad parks soften the monumental core, while traffic, seasonal extremes and uneven public space add friction. Three days are convincing; longer stays should not be inflated by Vitosha or Rila.

Why Wendelse likes it
Roman Serdica, medieval Christianity, Ottoman rule, national revival and socialism create deep but fragmented history.
Banitsa, shopska salad, grilled meats, yoghurt traditions and market produce give meals clear Bulgarian context.
Religious buildings, national institutions and socialist avenues show successive systems rather than one unified style.
