Riga

Latvia

A Baltic capital where medieval trade, Art Nouveau ambition, wooden neighbourhoods and occupation history occupy different versions of the same city.

Riga's Old Town is compact, but the destination becomes convincing when you cross its boundaries. The extraordinary Art Nouveau districts, Central Market's former Zeppelin hangars and surviving wooden streets show a city shaped by Baltic German trade, imperial growth, Latvian independence, occupation and renewal.

Museums dealing with occupation and national identity give necessary weight to the decorative architecture. The Daugava and canal parks provide breathing room, while winter brings short days and cold that can make the city atmospheric but less forgiving.

Why Wendelse likes it

History

Hanseatic trade, empire, independence, occupation and restored statehood remain unusually close in the city fabric.

Art & Architecture

Medieval churches, nationally romantic Art Nouveau and wooden neighbourhoods create exceptional architectural contrast.

Walkable & Relaxed

The Old Town, central boulevards and Art Nouveau district form an easy walking sequence with space to pause.
