Prague

Czechia

A capital whose Gothic, Baroque, Jewish and modernist histories reward looking beyond the famous skyline.

Prague earns its fame, but it is easiest to misunderstand when treated as a sequence of postcard stops. The useful story runs from the medieval royal city and Charles IV's New Town through Josefov's Jewish heritage, Habsburg Baroque, Czech nationalism, Cubism, functionalism and the political ruptures of the twentieth century. Prague Castle, the Charles Bridge and Old Town Square matter, but they become more rewarding when placed inside that longer argument about power, religion and Czech identity.

The city also has enough cultural life to absorb time away from the busiest streets: concert halls, theatres, galleries, beer halls, neighbourhood cafés and architecture beyond the centre. Prague suits travellers who want a substantial city break and will start early, cross the river, and give individual districts time rather than trying to consume the whole historic centre at once.

4 days is ideal for Prague.

Why Wendelse likes it

History

Royal Bohemia, Jewish Prague, Habsburg rule, the First Republic, occupation, communism and 1989 remain unusually visible within one city.

Art & Architecture

Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque, Art Nouveau, Czech Cubism and functionalism create exceptional architectural range.

Culture & Atmosphere

Music, theatre, literature, cafés, pubs and distinct neighbourhoods give Prague cultural depth well beyond its monuments.

Arrive & settle in

Arrival day

Afternoon
  • Arrive and check in.
  • Cross the river before the Charles Bridge fills — Use the bridge, Kampa and the Lesser Town as one early walking sequence while the stonework and river remain visible.

Nothing else planned. That's deliberate.

Saturday · 7 November

Your big exploring day

Weekend

Morning
  • Read the Castle as a seat of power, not one attraction — Move through courtyards, cathedral and palace spaces as a history of Bohemian and imperial authority rather than collecting separate tickets.
  • Give Josefov a focused historical half-day — Treat the synagogues, cemetery and collections as connected evidence of a community, not atmospheric scenery.

Keep the afternoon free — wander, sit somewhere, do nothing.

Sunday · 8 November

Take Prague at your own pace

Weekend

Afternoon
  • Follow Prague from Art Nouveau into Cubism — Compare familiar decorative Prague with the city's rarer angular Cubist buildings and design objects.
  • Use one neighbourhood to escape the monument circuit — Spend time in a district such as Holešovice, Karlín or Vinohrady where cafés, galleries and ordinary city life reset the pace.

Nothing else planned. That's deliberate.

Monday · 9 November

One last morning

Departure day

Morning
  • Breakfast, then a last walk through town.
  • Treat a pub or café as part of the city's history — Choose a place with a clear Czech social or brewing identity and give it time beyond a single drink photograph.
Afternoon
  • Lunch, then the journey home.

Leave gaps between plans — nothing here needs rushing.
