Madrid

Spain

An inland capital whose royal planning, world-class painting and late-running neighbourhood life reward more time than its first visual impression suggests.

Madrid does not announce itself through one defining monument. Its strength builds through the Prado's royal collection, the Reina Sofía's arguments about modern Spain, Habsburg streets, Bourbon boulevards and neighbourhoods that come alive over long lunches and late evenings.

Retiro, markets, taverns and theatre prevent the trip becoming a museum marathon. The city is large, hot in summer and committed to a later daily rhythm than many short-break visitors expect. Four days are easy to justify without borrowing Toledo or Segovia.

4 days is ideal for Madrid.

Why Wendelse likes it

Food & Drink

Cocido, callos, calamari rolls, vermouth and old taverns give the capital its own food habits rather than a generic Spanish menu.

History

Habsburg and Bourbon planning, empire, civil conflict, dictatorship and democracy are represented across institutions and streets.

Art & Architecture

The Prado, Reina Sofía and Thyssen form extraordinary collection depth within a city of royal and civic architecture.

Arrive & settle in

Arrival day

Afternoon
  • Arrive and check in.
  • Let Retiro reset the day — Use the park after a collection visit for trees, pavilions and unstructured time rather than filling every hour indoors.

Nothing else planned. That's deliberate.

Saturday · 7 November

Your big exploring day

Weekend

Morning
  • Walk from Habsburg intimacy to Bourbon scale — Move from Plaza Mayor and older streets toward the Royal Palace and planned boulevards, noticing how the capital changed.
  • Build a selective Prado visit — Choose a line through Velázquez, Goya and selected European rooms rather than treating the collection as a test of endurance.

Keep the afternoon free — wander, sit somewhere, do nothing.

Sunday · 8 November

Take Madrid at your own pace

Weekend

Afternoon
  • Use art to confront modern Spain — Focus the Reina Sofía visit around Guernica and works that illuminate civil war, exile, dictatorship and experiment.
Evening
  • Understand the tavern before ordering — Have vermouth, then choose a Madrileño dish such as callos or cocido where its preparation and setting are taken seriously.

Nothing else planned. That's deliberate.

Monday · 9 November
