WendelseShort breaks, reconsidered

Lyon

France

A substantial city choice with Roman history, silk-making and regional food, distinct from the smaller French towns already covered.

Lyon rewards giving its different districts their own time. The old town and Roman hillside tell one story; Croix-Rousse’s silk workshops tell another. A bouchon meal, an art collection and a river walk can sit between them without turning the trip into a race across the city.

Three or four days are the best first fit. Two are possible with a focused plan, while five suit a slower museum-and-neighbourhood stay. Use local transport between the hills and the more distant collections.

Food & Drink

Food and drink in Lyon

Quenelles are light dumplings, sometimes made with pike and baked in a sauce; sauce Nantua is associated with crayfish. A Lyonnaise salad commonly combines leaves, bacon, croutons and a poached egg. Pink sugar-coated almonds flavour the region’s praline tart. A bouchon is a traditional local restaurant, not a guarantee that every dish will suit every diner. Read the menu, check the opening day and choose a place that explains its cooking. There is no need to order offal to have a Lyonnais meal.

Must try

Quenelles

Light dumplings, sometimes made with pike, commonly baked with sauce. Ask which version the restaurant serves.

Lyonnaise salad

Leaves, bacon, croutons and a poached egg make this a more substantial plate than the word salad might suggest.

Praline tart

Pink sugar-coated almonds make a sweet, bright filling. Treat it as regional baking rather than an invented ancient city recipe.

Good to know

  • Opening and stock vary by venue. Regional traditions are not claims of invention in this city.

Why Wendelse likes it

Food & Drink

Quenelles, Lyonnaise salad and traditional bouchon cooking give the food interest real depth.

History

Roman remains, Renaissance streets and the silk workers’ quarter make different periods visible.

Art & Architecture

Fine art, the Confluences collections and the city’s contrasting buildings support several substantial visits.

Things worth doing

Musée des Beaux-Arts

A substantial art collection for an indoor half-day. Closed Tuesday; Friday opening later; 20th-century rooms currently restricted.

Pair Lugdunum with the Roman theatres

Use the museum to understand the hillside remains, then spend time outside. The museum normally closes Monday; the theatre grounds have their own opening schedule.

Walk Vieux Lyon respectfully

Explore the streets and only the traboules and courtyards open to visitors. These passages are often part of people’s homes, so keep noise down and respect closed gates.
