Lisbon

Portugal

Hills and river light frame a city best understood through rebuilding, tiled surfaces, maritime power, neighbourhood life and food with an Atlantic edge.

Lisbon rewards anyone willing to read its hills rather than race between viewpoints. Alfama preserves a different street pattern from the rebuilt Baixa; Belém sets maritime ambition beside imperial consequences; tiled façades and calçada turn surface decoration into a way of reading power, faith and rebuilding.

Food, fado, political history and several serious museums support four or five days without Sintra. The cost is physical: hills, polished paving and crowded trams make apparently short distances less easy than they look.

4 days is ideal for Lisbon.

Why Wendelse likes it

Food & Drink

Seafood, salt cod, grilled fish, bifanas, pastries and small taverns connect Atlantic produce with everyday eating.

History

Roman and Islamic traces, maritime expansion, empire, the 1755 disaster and dictatorship all shape the city.

Art & Architecture

Manueline monuments, Pombaline planning, azulejos, calçada and later modernism make the city visually distinctive.

Keep the afternoon free — wander, sit somewhere, do nothing.

Afternoon
  • Use tilework as history — Visit the National Tile Museum to understand azulejos as architecture, image-making and a record of the pre-earthquake city.

Nothing else planned. That's deliberate.
