WendelseShort breaks, reconsidered

Lausanne

Switzerland

A steep lake city where Olympic identity, outsider art and a new museum quarter carry more weight than the postcard view.

Lausanne is a city of levels. The cathedral and old streets occupy the upper town; the station and Plateforme 10 sit below; Ouchy and the Olympic Museum meet the lake farther downhill. That geography makes the city less effortlessly walkable than Vevey or Montreux, but it also creates genuinely different urban districts rather than one promenade proposition.

Museums provide the strongest reason to stay. The Olympic Museum is the obvious international institution, while Collection de l'Art Brut, Photo Elysée, mudac and the cantonal fine-arts museum give Lausanne unusual breadth in outsider art, photography and design. Lake time and access to Lavaux complement this urban culture. Lausanne should stand independently; the Riviera destinations remain separate records and possible Trip Shapes, not borrowed depth.

4 days is ideal for Lausanne.

Why Wendelse likes it

Art & Architecture

Plateforme 10, Art Brut, photography, design and the cathedral create exceptional range for a city of this size.

Culture & Atmosphere

Olympic institutions, universities, museums and francophone urban life give Lausanne a strong contemporary identity.

Food & Drink

Vaud wine, lake fish, markets and a strong restaurant scene support the break, though the food identity is regional rather than uniquely Lausanne.

Arrive & settle in

Arrival day

Afternoon
  • Arrive and check in.
  • Follow Palud from market streets into the upper town — Use the ordinary civic streets to connect cathedral Lausanne with the lower city.

Nothing else planned. That's deliberate.

Saturday · 7 November

Your big exploring day

Weekend

Morning
  • Begin at the cathedral and read the city's levels — Start high and use the descent to understand why Lausanne feels like several linked districts.
  • Give Plateforme 10 a deliberate museum day — Select exhibitions across fine art, photography and design rather than attempting every institution.

Keep the afternoon free — wander, sit somewhere, do nothing.

Sunday · 8 November

Take Lausanne at your own pace

Weekend

Morning
  • Treat the Olympic Museum as civic history — Look at sport, politics, media and design alongside trophies, then use the sculpture park and lake setting.
Afternoon
  • Choose Art Brut because it is distinctive — Make room for the collection that could not simply be transferred to another Swiss city.

Nothing else planned. That's deliberate.

Monday · 9 November
