Italy
A black-lava Baroque city where earthquakes, eruptions, markets and rough-edged street life have produced an eastern Sicilian identity of its own.
Catania has repeatedly rebuilt itself against Etna. Roman remains survive below and between a largely eighteenth-century centre reconstructed after the 1693 earthquake, where pale carving and dark lava stone give Baroque architecture an unmistakable weight. The fish market, bakeries and crowded streets keep that formal city from feeling museum-like.
The experience is intense: traffic, heat, noise and uneven maintenance are real constraints. Those qualities should neither be romanticised nor used to dismiss a city with enough archaeology, architecture and food culture for a strong three-day break without climbing Etna or borrowing Taormina.

Why Wendelse likes it
La Pescheria, pasta alla Norma, horsemeat traditions, granita and eastern-Sicilian baking give food defining local force.
Greek foundation, Roman remains, earthquake and eruption history are embedded in the rebuilt centre.
Dark lava stone turns late Baroque rebuilding into an architectural language distinct from other Sicilian cities.

Read Piazza del Duomo and nearby streets as a coordinated rebuilding project after the 1693 earthquake.
Visit early enough to see the working fish market, then eat nearby without turning traders into a spectacle.
Give the theatre and Odeon time to reveal how the ancient city survives within later streets.
