Belgium
A multilingual capital where guildhall theatre, Art Nouveau, Surrealism and neighbourhood café life sit awkwardly—and productively—together.
Brussels is more fragmented than its postcard centre suggests. Grand-Place supplies the spectacle, but the stronger break moves between Horta's domestic architecture, Magritte's visual jokes, comic-strip culture, Marolles flea-market streets and cafés where beer is treated with the seriousness of wine.
The city rarely resolves into a single beautiful whole. Its French- and Dutch-speaking identities, European institutions, uneven planning and sudden shifts between grandeur and ordinary neighbourhoods are part of the point. Distances between areas require some public transport, and the central tourist streets are often the least persuasive part of the city.
4 days is ideal for Brussels.
Why Wendelse likes it
Lambic, gueuze, Trappist and abbey brewing traditions sit beside brasseries, fritkots, shrimp croquettes and a serious chocolate craft.
Guilds, monarchy, industrial growth, linguistic politics and European institutions leave different histories in close proximity.
Grand-Place, Horta's houses, civic museums and modern interventions make Brussels one of Europe's strongest architecture-led breaks.

Look past the gold and symmetry to the competing guild houses and civic theatre encoded in the square.
Use the Horta Museum to understand staircases, light and crafted detail before looking again at façades across Saint-Gilles.
Pair Magritte with selected rooms in the Royal Museums rather than attempting every collection.
