Spain
A city of painting, maritime history and Basque food, with the river connecting the old streets to the former industrial waterfront.
Bilbao makes more sense when you follow the river. The Guggenheim introduces the city’s newer face, but the old trading streets, market and maritime museum explain what came before it. Leave room for the bars around Plaza Nueva, where a few pintxos can become the evening.
Three days give art, food and the old town a comfortable balance. A fourth allows another collection and longer walks; five days suit a slower or more specialist stay. You do not need a day trip to San Sebastián to justify being here.

Begin with a few pintxos: individual bar snacks, often displayed on the counter, that let you try different flavours without committing to a long meal. A gilda threads anchovy, olive and pickled pepper together; the sharp, salty bite belongs to the wider Basque tradition. Txakoli is the region’s fresh white wine. Ribera offers a different food stop. Visit the produce stalls while the working market is open, then choose a market bar or restaurant separately. Sunday bar opening does not mean the produce market is trading.

Must try
Anchovy, olive and pickled pepper make a salty, sharp pintxo. Treat both food and wine as Basque regional traditions, not Bilbao inventions.
Start with one or two small bites, then move on if another counter appeals. Check prices and ordering at each bar.
Browse produce earlier in the day. Market stalls and the adjoining places to eat follow different opening patterns.
Good to know
Why Wendelse likes it
Pintxo bars and the Ribera market make food part of a walk through the city, with Basque flavours explained in small bites.
The Guggenheim, Azkuna Zentroa and the reopened Fine Arts Museum offer different kinds of art and architecture.
Plaza Nueva, neighbourhood bars and the reused industrial waterfront give the city life beyond its museums.
Bilbao has its own airport: Bilbao Airport

Connect the old streets and Plaza Nueva, leaving space for a café or a few pintxos. Public streets are separate from church and shop opening.
A working food market and a distinct lunch stop. Produce market Monday–Saturday; no Sunday produce-market promise. Restaurant/bar hours differ.
