Bern

Switzerland

A capital that feels better when you stop treating it like one.

Bern is a city to walk rather than conquer. Its old town sits inside a bend of the Aare, with sandstone streets, fountains and long arcades giving the centre an unusual sense of continuity. Walk downhill beyond the Zytglogge and the city gradually becomes quieter rather than ending.

Give the famous sights their time, but don't make Bern a monuments trip. The pleasure is in moving between the arcades, the river, cafés and viewpoints without needing much of a plan. Even poor weather does not entirely spoil that rhythm, because much of the old town can still be explored under cover.

4 days is ideal for Bern.

Why Wendelse likes it

The old town and its arcades

Kilometres of covered walkway, fountains and sandstone. This is the destination, not the route between sights.

The Zytglogge

Worth noticing and worth pausing for, but not worth a whole morning. Go inside only if the mechanism genuinely interests you.

The Minster and its terrace

The building matters, but so does the terrace behind it and the way the city drops towards the river.

The lower old town and the Aare

Keep walking downhill. The streets get quieter and the river arrives sooner than you expect.

Parliament Square

A layer of the city rather than a government itinerary — the square, the fountains and the view south.

Bernese food and beer

One good regional meal, and a beer culture that is more interesting here than a generic Swiss wine list.

Things worth doing

A first day that works

The upper old city, past the Zytglogge, on to the Minster and its terrace, then down through the lower streets to the Aare.

If you have a second day

Pick one thing by interest — art, history, the bear park, the river — and then let the Aare take the rest of the day.

Extra time

Cafés, small shops, a market if your dates happen to align, more river, more wandering.

Wendelse tip

If you walk past the Zytglogge, notice it and continue without feeling you have "completed" a sight, you are probably approaching Bern correctly.

Where to stay

Stay in the old town

Best for walking and evenings on foot

Arcades, restaurants and the river are all within the bend of the Aare.
