WendelseShort breaks, reconsidered

Bari

Italy

A lived Adriatic port where pilgrimage, old-town streets and precise street food matter more than its role as a regional gateway.

Bari works through contrasts: the tight lanes and Romanesque churches of Bari Vecchia, the formal nineteenth-century Murat district, a working port and a long seafront used by the city itself. The Basilica of San Nicola gives it international pilgrimage importance, while focaccia barese, orecchiette, tiella and panzerotti make food unusually visible and specific.

Its cultural depth is real but compact. Two or three days are convincing; longer scores must not borrow Alberobello, Matera or the Puglian coast.

4 days in Bari leaves room to slow right down.

Why Wendelse likes it

Food & Drink

Focaccia barese, hand-shaped orecchiette, rice-potato-mussel tiella and panzerotti create a defining food proposition.

Walkable & Relaxed

The old town and central grid are compact, flat and rewarding to wander.

Culture & Atmosphere

Pilgrimage, port life, markets and street food keep the centre lived-in rather than preserved.
