Spain
A Catalan metropolis where Roman walls, medieval institutions, industrial expansion and Modernisme remain legible beneath the pressure of global tourism.
Barcelona earns its place through breadth, not simply fame. Roman fragments and the medieval city lead into the Eixample's planned grid, Modernisme's wider movement and major collections of Catalan art and design. Gaudí matters, but he becomes more interesting when placed beside Domènech i Montaner, Puig i Cadafalch and the social ambitions of the expanding city.
Markets, neighbourhood meals, the waterfront and strong contemporary culture can sustain four or five days without leaving the city. That depth comes with real costs: booking pressure, cruise crowds, summer heat and neighbourhoods strained by overtourism.
4 days is ideal for Barcelona.
Why Wendelse likes it
Catalan cooking, market produce, vermouth and neighbourhood dining reward specificity beyond generic tapas.
Roman Barcino, medieval Catalan institutions, industrial growth, dictatorship and democratic renewal remain visible across the city.
The Eixample and Modernisme provide a city-wide architectural argument extending well beyond Gaudí.

Trace Roman walls and selected medieval institutions while separating genuine fabric from later romantic restoration.
Walk the grid comparing Gaudí with Domènech i Montaner and Puig i Cadafalch rather than collecting isolated façades.
Visit with a timed ticket after understanding the Eixample and treat the building as an evolving structural and religious project.
